Why do we enjoy the food we eat and why do we literally fall in love with and desire some foods more than others? Through evolution and scientific research the answer in simple terms is this – if it looks good, smells fabulous and tastes divine then we know we are not only going to satisfy our hunger, but store the image, taste and smell in our subconscious mind for future reference!
Redlove® has so many of these fantastic attributes you will be on ‘apple watch’ from the moment you receive your tree to the very first crunch of this superb apple
So why is Redlove® so special?
• It is a dark red fleshed apple variety
• It has good round average sized fruit
• The flavour is a good balance of sweet and sharp with berry nuance
• Firm, crisp and juicy
• Ripens early to mid September
• Ready to eat when picked (from early September)
• Will store up to January
• A versatile dessert apple that is good for cooking and juicing
• Crops well
• Exceptionaly high in anthocyans: the tests in the University of Hohenheim (Germany) in February 2010 analysed the stability of the anthocyans in the entire apple, including skin and flesh. Overall the content of the anthocyans in Redlove is about 10-13 times higher than in normal red skinned apples where most of the anthocyans are in the skin. Redlove contains even more anthocyans than in blueberries and even blackberries!
Anthocyans are strong antioxidants which bond and neutralize highly reactive, free radicals, preventing the harmful UV radiation and have antibacterial qualities.
• It is known that the cooking process causes the loss of some natural pigments in the case of coloured foods; however Redlove® retains its red colour throughout the cooking process and does not brown when sliced
• Easy to grow with good scab resistance (a major disease of fruit and foliage)
• It has very attractive, long-lasting and unusual deep purple pink blossom
• Not self –fertile but easily pollinated by other apple trees or another Redlove®
• Can be grown in a container as well as in the ground
The Redlove® is grown on M9 rootstock and will grow into an easily managed tree up to approx. 2.5m (8') tall in the garden or grow in a large container on the patio.
